Qigong Programs: How to Choose the Right Training Path
An Overview Of Qigong Training At Red Thread Institute
There are many ways to learn Qigong — from beginner online classes to advanced professional certification. The right path depends on your goals, your level of experience, and how deeply you want to engage with the practice.
This page outlines the four core training pathways at Red Thread Institute, along with guidance on how to choose between them. All programs offer NCBAHM CE/PDA credit through Red Thread’s approval as a continuing education provider by the National Certification Board for Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine.
How to Choose the Right Path
A few questions can help orient your decision:
Are you new to Qigong and looking to build a personal practice? → Start with Insight Qigong Online.
Do you want a deeper personal practice rooted in Chinese medicine theory? → Consider Medical Qigong for Self Mastery.
Are you interested in working with others in a clinical or healing context? → The Medical Qigong Practitioner certification is the professional path.

Professional Certification in Medical Qigong Healing
Best for: Practitioners seeking clinical skills in energetic medicine.
Red Thread’s professional certification track begins with the Medical Qigong Practitioner (MQP) program. At 300 hours, it covers the knowledge and clinical skills required to assess and work with Medical Qigong therapeutics.
Training is delivered in a hybrid format — live virtual sessions combined with in-person intensives — to provide the experiential depth that clinical competency requires. Emphasis is placed on applicable skills, safety, energetic hygiene, clinical ethics, and practitioner personal cultivation.
Multiple certification levels are available from 300 to 2,000 hours, allowing practitioners to continue developing depth and specialization over time.
Personal Cultivation: Medical Qigong for Self Mastery
Best for: Those seeking a personal practice rooted in Chinese medicine with depth and nuance.
This program draws directly from the professional certification curriculum, offering the self-care and cultivation practices that form the foundation of Red Thread’s clinical training. The focus is on developing a deep, self-directed Qigong practice informed by Chinese medicine theory and applied to your own health and vitality.
Courses are taught live online, with optional in-person training available for those seeking additional depth.
Health Qigong Online: Insight Qigong
Best for: Those new to Qigong who want a complete, well-grounded practice they can start immediately.
Insight Qigong® is a self-paced online course that teaches a complete Health Qigong practice. The program is designed to go beyond instruction in postures and movements — it explains the how and why behind each practice, including foundational Chinese medicine theory, so students develop genuine understanding alongside technique.
The on-demand format means you can begin at any time and work at your own pace. The course is appropriate for complete beginners and offers enough depth to be valuable for more experienced students returning to the foundations.
Qigong Teacher Training: Insight Qigong Teacher Certification
Best for: Established Qigong practitioners who want to teach — and want the preparation to do it well.
Learning Qigong and learning to teach Qigong are different skill sets. This 350-hour certification program is built around that distinction — developing not just knowledge of the practice but the pedagogical skills, ethical grounding, and experiential preparation required to guide others effectively.
Training combines in-person experiential intensives with online support sessions. The program is appropriate for practitioners with an existing Insight Qigong background who are ready to make the transition into teaching.
